Faculty of Law enters into MoU with Pan-African Parliament

On 17 October 2017, the Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria (UP) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) to advance the agenda of good governance in Africa. The collaboration envisaged in the MoU will be spear-headed by the Centre for Human Rights, but may involve other departments, centres, institutes and units in the Faculty of Law.

A relationship of reciprocity is foreseen. On the one hand, members of the Pan-African Parliament (MPAPs) may benefit by attending courses at the Centre, and interns may be placed with MPAPs. On the other hand, working with the PAP will provide an opportunity to further the research agendas of UP students.

One of the challenges faced by the PAP has been inadequate exposure. The MoU therefore also aims to increase the dissemination of PAP materials and information on its activities.

‘The University of Pretoria must be just about the closest residential research university to the PAP. There is, therefore, a moral obligation for UP to get involved in advancing the agenda of good governance in Africa, by more closely supporting the PAP,’ said Prof Frans Viljoen, Director of the Centre, at the signing of the MoU with The Honourable Roger Nkodo Dang, President of the PAP.
