UKZN proudly introduces the first cohort of Medical doctors in primary care to graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Family Medicine.
The PGDip family medicine is a new program to expand the training for generalist doctors in primary care. The programme aims to enhance the quality of general practice by capacitating primary care doctors to fulfil their roles as competent doctors, change agents, collaborative clinicians, capability builders, critical thinkers and community advocates in the future South African Primary Health Care System.
The diploma has been developed in response to the increased need for primary care doctors as outlined in the vision of the National Health Insurance and the drive toward Re-engineering Primary Health Care as core strategies by the National Department of Health.
The core content has been developed in collaboration with the academic family medicine departments from all medical schools in South Africa. The initial cohort was drawn from mostly rural hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal and also included doctors from the private sector.
