North-West University (NWU) final-year B.Admin student Mbulelo Mbiphi has made it to the top 10 on the South African men’s fashion magazine GQ’s Best Dressed List for 2021.
GQ’s Best Dressed List is an annual competition where fashionistas and the country’s most stylish individuals are invited to show off their dapper style by sharing an image of themselves – using the hashtag@GQBD – on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
Mbulelo, also known as “Old John Mayoyo”, was born and bred in the dusty township of Khuma, Stilfontein near Klerksdorp. He loves art, fashion and music, and wears many hats – he is a content creator, creative director, model, podcaster, and co-founder of the company The Unknownz.
“I can’t begin to describe how amazing and grateful I feel. I never thought this would happen, especially considering where I come from,” says Mbulelo.
“This is a validating experience for me, and also proof for every township kid that it pays off to believe in one’s uniqueness. Now I feel as if everything I dream of is without a doubt possible – as long as you put in the necessary work,” he adds.
Mbulelo says his vintage dress style is inspired by different eras, his feelings and his surroundings (the township).
“It feels like time-travelling through clothes. Each outfit has its own narrative – today I can show up dressed like a 90s kid going to pre-school, and tomorrow like a notorious, stylish rich uncle,” he says.
Mbulelo now needs your support and votes to make it to GQ’s Top 5.
Follow the link on his Instagram [@OldJohn_Mayoyo] bio or go to @GQSouthAfrica bio. Voting is open until 30 September 2021.
