Japan offers free scholarships for SA students

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) – in partnership with the government of Japan – is inviting scholarship applications for South African students to study at some of Japan’s top universities for the 2018/19 academic year.

The African Business Education (ABE) scholarship programme, offers opportunities for young and eligible African men and women to study Master’s courses in Japan. The ABE Initiative programme aims at human resource development in both private and public sectors in order to cultivate a strong human network between Japan and the African continent.

Upon completion, graduates will also be afforded opportunities to undertake internships at Japanese enterprises in order to develop effective skills and knowledge in various fields in preparation for their contribution to Africa’s development in collaboration with the Japanese private sector.

Candidates for the scholarship must be South African citizens aged between 22 and 39 as of 1 April 2018 – with a strong academic record.

Applicants also have to possess adequate English communication skills and be available to study in Japan in 2018, in the following fields of study:

• Agriculture
• Economics/ Business Administration
• Engineering

However, preference will be given to Master`s degree programme applicants.

The Japan Government provides full tuition fee and monthly allowances for Master`s Program and Internship, airfare for single return from Johannesburg to Tokyo, Japan, and research support fees, among others.

Successful candidates will also be expected to attend a brief orientation programme on basic Japanese language course and introductory course for Japanese life.
