Recent research conducted by Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic of Harvard University reports that showing off and being overly confident in a job interview is a huge mistake.
“When in an interview, it is important to talk about your talents without coming across as arrogant,” says the Harvard University author.
He says “you can do that by briefly quantifying your relevant experiences”. And it’s really quiet simply.
“Keep your answers brief, because we are living in an age of short attention span,” He says.
He also offers more advice “quantify any relevant experience and get to the point quickly. Speaking about your passion rather than your skills.
Don’t rate your skills
He says you can’t expect others to be impressed with your sense of humor or your leadership skills, for example.
The report argues that instead of telling the interviewer of how great a leader you are or that you are a disruptive thinker, rather explain that you enjoy managing teams.
Focus on your potential
Premuzic also advices you to focus on the future than the past. What you have done is less important than what you can offer. Describe the key qualities of your potential. Potential is what an employer looks for in a prospective employee.
Give concrete examples
The qualities of your potential should be demonstrated with concrete examples. If you state you have great people skills, give an example of an incident that happened to you which supports that statement.
References are important
The report also reveals that a good word about you from other people to the right person will go a long way. Recommendation letters play an important role in determining your success.
Beware of self-promotion
Premuzic advices to always remember there are strong cultural differences in people’s tolerance to self-promotion.
