Fundi recently joined forces with the South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET) as a contributing sponsor at the 2nd SAPSET Student Leadership Camp.
Hosted at Sediba Kwele Adventure Camp in the North-West, the four-day initiative brought together 43 high school learners – many of whom are children of fallen police officers – for an intensive programme focused on academic readiness, leadership and personal development.
As part of the initiative, Fundi gifted 42 FundiMatch career guidance assessment vouchers (to the collective value of R42K) to the grade 10, 11 and 12 learners who attended. In addition to the assessment and the workshop hosted to unpack the career guidance test, learners also received goodie bags to assist them with their studies.
Speaking to learners at the event, Sphiwe Masuku, Fundi’s Head of Brand and Marketing, shared that it was a privilege for Fundi to be part of their journeys: “At Fundi, we believe in the transformative power of education – to change lives and futures for the better. We are committed to ensuring that every learner has a fighting chance at building the bright and sustainable future they deserve. Today we want to help each of you to take a step closer to the future of your dreams.”
She noted that students on the programme are not just beneficiaries, but rather future leaders, entrepreneurs and change-makers. “We have come here today to share this important message with them. It’s about unlocking their full potential and contribution, and walking the journey with them.”
SAPSET continues to honour the legacy of South Africa’s fallen police officers by investing in the education of their children. Learners attending the camp came from the provinces most affected by police killings including the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Gauteng – highlighting the importance of the intervention.
In the 2023/2024 financial year alone, 111 South African Police Service (SAPS) officers lost their lives. Of these, 39 officers were killed while on duty, and 72 were off duty at the time of their deaths. This represents a significant increase of over 20% compared to the previous year.[1]
National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, who addressed the learners, urged them to remain committed to their studies: “The only difference between those who succeed and those who don’t is discipline and dedication. South Africa needs you – our future leaders – to rise, identify opportunities and build the nation. Our hope lies with you.”
On the second day of the leadership camp, learners had the opportunity to engage directly with Masuku and the team from Fundi around funding opportunities, career guidance and their future plans. “Our involvement in the SAPSET camp reflects Fundi’s broader mission to make education accessible, relevant and transformative, with a strong focus on the ‘missing middle’ – those in underserved and vulnerable communities. For us, days like today are anchored in purpose. We’re not just giving students tools. We’re giving them belief, access and a glimpse of a future worth striving for. We wish each of them every success,” she concludes.
