The United States has partnered with the African Academy of Science to provide a fellowship opportunity to African scientists.

This fellowship offers the scientists an opportunity to expand their knowledge and find solutions on health issues faced by their respective countries.

Who can apply?

  • The applicant must be citizens of an African country and currently employed in an academic, research or government position in an African country .
  • The applicant must have a relevant doctoral degree (e.g. PhD, MD, MBBS) awarded not more than 15 years ago.
  • The applicant must have less than five years of relevant research experience by their start of duty date at NIH.
  • The applciant be on leave or sabbatical from their home institution under the NIH Intramural Visiting Fellow Program, while at the NIH.

  • Infectious diseases
  • Nutrition
  • Reproductive, maternal and child health
  • Skills for clinical and translational research.

Study in the Caribbean!

The Caribbean Maritime University is offering South African students an opportunity to study the Bachelor of Science Degree in Cruise Shipping and Maritime Tourism in Jamaica, in which the Department of Higher Education and Training will be responsible for nominations for the scholarship.

The scholarship will only be given to ten prospective students. Please bear in mind this is a tuition fee-only scholarship.

Field of study

  • Engineering in industrial systems
  • Cruise shipping and marine tourism

Who can apply?

  • South African citizens in good health and with a strong academic record.
  • The applicant must have successfully completed National Senior Certificate with a Bachelor’s pass and a minimum of 65% average mark achieved, excluding the Life Orientation subject.
  • Applicants should be above 18 years of age.
  • Applicants must apply for full-time study at the Caribbean Maritime University for the academic year starting in 2018.
  • Candidates must be available to study in the Caribbean from August 2018.
  • All applicants must meet the entry criteria for their selected programme at CMU.
  • All applicants must meet the minimum academic requirement for entry into a similar programme at a South African university.

The scholarship covers:

  • Tuition fees
  • 50% accommodation discount for 2 Engineering scholarship students.

NB: The scholarship does NOT cover international travel, accommodation (university accommodation is approximately US$3,500 per student per year), living expenses, uniforms (uniforms cost approximately US$750) or any other items not stated above. No funding is available from the DHET. Any recipient of this scholarship must be able to cover these costs themselves.

  • Certified copy of passport
  • Reference letter from high school.
