Eskom’s Energy Education Programme supports teachers with educator guides and learner activity sheets to teach Grade R to Grade 9 students the value of electricity and the important role it plays in bringing comfort into the home.
One of the programme’s aims is to improve the quality of mathematics and science education in South Africa by partnering with educational initiatives also committed to this cause. One such partner is the Thandulwazi Maths & Science Academy, with whom Eskom has partnered since 2012.
Over the last decade, more than 8 000 teachers from under-resourced schools serving low-income areas in Gauteng and the Sekhukhune District of Limpopo Province have attended workshops presented by the academy’s teacher development programme.
More than 2 500 students and educators have benefited from Thandulwazi’s programmes in 2017.
At the closing ceremony of the Thandulwazi Teacher Development Programme held on Saturday 14 October 2017, more than 900 teachers received certificates and qualified for CPD (continuous professional development) points for the workshops completed. One of the Thandulwazi beneficiaries, Mr Louis Bhenyu, a senior phase educator from Gideon Rambuwani Primary School, wrote: “I am a totally different teacher from the one that walked into the gates of Thandulwazi” at the beginning of this year.
“The Thandulwazi Maths & Science Academy is a proud example of an educational institution that uses the Eskom energy-related material, developed by our Energy Education Programme, to upskill and expose teachers to the CAPS required facets of energy”, comments Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe.
