

Eight SA universities in world top 1,000

The Times Higher Education World University Ranking organisation (THE) has released its latest global university rankings for 2017/2018.
Eight South African universities appear in the top 1,000 globally.
Over 1,000 institutions from 77 countries featured in the rankings.
The University of Cape Town is ranked 171 of the top 200, followed by Wits, Stellenbosch and the University of KwaZulu-Natal – all within the top 500. The University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg (UJ), University of Western Cape (UWC) and Unisa make up the remaining eight with UJ and UWC in the top 1,000 for the first time.
The rankings are based upon performance points: teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income.
Oxford University in the UK retained its top position as Number One, followed by Cambridge University in second place and Stanford University in the US in third place.
