The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), in its latest annual report, says it has taken steps to ensure that training in 13 trades is boosted.
The department explains that trades, that include bricklaying, electrical work, millwrights, boilermakers, automotive mechanics, diesel mechanics, carpenters and joiners, welders, riggers, fitter and turners, mechanical fitters and pipe fitters, are essential for the Strategic Infrastructure Projects (SIPs).
The boost in training will come through the service level agreements with major industry partners or associations specialising in these trades who will help build the capacity of 26 TVET colleges nationwide.
It says that the colleges are required to play a greater role in developing the artisan skills which required for government programmes focused on growing the economy of the country.
The programmes mentioned in report include SIPs, Operation Phakisa, the War on Leaks, amongst others.
Skills development for the government programmes is also being given additional focus by DHET by the creation of internal systems to support the initiative.
