The men’s and ladies football teams of the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Vanderbijlpark flew the campus flag high during the recent University Sport South Africa (USSA) Championships that took place in Johannesburg.
Both teams took part in the B-division and emerged as proud division winners.
The men’s team clinched the top position after convincing wins over Mangosuthu University of Technology, Stellenbosch University and Monash. The final match saw the guys in green taking on the team of the Tshwane University of Technology. This game saw NWU Vanderbijlpark scoring twice in the first half to secure gold in the B-division and promotion to the prestigious A-division. Two players, Siyabulela Moisea and Kevan van Niekerk were awarded as the tournament’s Top Goal Scorer and Top Goalkeeper respectively.
The men’s football results were: MUT 0 – 4 NWU Vaal, Stellenbosch University 0 – 2 NWU Vaal, Monash 1 – 3 NWU Vaal and TUT 0 – 2 NWU Vaal.
The ladies team also reached the final of the B-division after convincing wins over Tshwane University of Technology, Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, NWU Mahikeng and Mangosuthu University of Technology. The final match saw the team from Vanderbijlpark defeat Tshwane University of Technology with four goals to three on penalties, after a nail biting 1-1 draw. Individual accolades were awarded to Tumelo Thebe for Coach of the Tournament as well as to Kgomotso Baloi for Top Goalkeeper.
The ladies football results were: NWU Vaal 3 – 1 TUT, Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University 0 – 5 NWU Vaal, NWU Mahikeng 0 – 1 NWU Vaal, NWU Vaal 2 – 1 Mangosuthu University of Technology, NWU Vaal 1 – 1 Tshwane University of Technology (4-3 on penalties).
