In 2016, Schneider Electric, in conjunction with Nomade des mers, hosted a low-tech competition that was facilitated by the Schneider Electric Head Office in Midrand. Various institutions participated, including the VaVUT and French South African Schneider Electric Education Centre (FSASEC).

The aim of the competition was to expose students to design in electrical engineering. The students were required to come up with electrical designs using affordable and recyclable materials.

In a ceremony that was hosted at VUT this quarter it was announced that FSASEC had won the first and the second prizes, earning them 500 euros and 300 euros, respectively. VUT took third place, winning 200 euros.
