Just a week after celebrating his 25th birthday, University of Free State student Wayde van Niekerk, Olympic 400m record holder, secured another mention in the history books last week when he took gold with a new meeting record and fastest time of time this year in Monaco.

Commenting on the win, Van Niekerk says: “It was great performance today, I’m feeling positive about it,” the South African responded after the race. “My body feels to be in great shape and this win from behind gives me lot of confidence.
Van Niekerk has been selected to compete in 200m and 400m races in the IAAF senior championships in London in August next month.
He will be joined in the 200m by fellow South Africans Clarence Munyani and Akani Simbine. Pieter Conradie will has joined the 400m South African race line-up.
