The Mail & Guardian newspaper’s 2017 top 200 South African listing was the hotly contested race with women taking the ultimate honours.

Women took a whopping 103 of the 200 reader nominations in the 11 categories.

The listing, which has been published since 2006, provides insight to the important contributions South African women are making to society.

According to the 2016 Human Development Report, published by the United Nations Development Programme, South Africa’s composite score on issues such as health, education, poverty and equality, amongst others has been on the rise since 2010 and now stands at 0.6666.

The scores show that women’s impact is now more widespread.

Surprisingly, women dominate four traditionally male-dominated areas: The arts, science and technology, and justice and law. Women also ruled in education.

Men and women shared the spoils in the health, environment, civil society and sport categories.

However, men could only muster wins in three categories: Business and environment, film and media, and politics and government.

Of the women ranked in the survey, over 50% held a higher education and training qualification; more than half had graduated from the universities of the Witwatersrand and Cape Town.

Furthermore, the remaining ranked women graduates had attended 15 of South Africa’s 26 universities and universities of technology.
