Growth Institute agrees with the Minister of Higher Education’s decision to halt the 2019 NFSAS funding plans until the chaos associated with the 2018 funding plans have been sorted.

Allegations of unethical behaviour and possible corruption in connection with student funding cannot be taken lightly.  The Minister should take a tough stance and make an example of perpetrators.  In fact, she owes the youth of South Africa the courtesy of tough and decisive action.

It will be difficult for the Minister to stem the tide of shambles that she inherited from her predecessor.  As the impact of the Minister’s decision to halt the 2019 funding plans starts to bite, there is real concern is that campus unrest could again erupt and fan the fears of parents and students that tertiary education is no longer a place of learning but a battlefield.

Growth Institute sees about hundreds of schools annually and we speak to thousands of learners and parents.  One of the main discussions is that parents are no longer willing to risk sending their children into environments where their safety could be an issue.  Neither are parents willing to allow whole academic years to be wasted due to uncontrolled militant action.

There is a great deal of agreement to help deserving students with funding, but the country cannot continue to condone a climate of incompetence and thuggery.  This cries against the most elementary of human rights.
