Careerjunction’s 2016-17 salary review shows that Gauteng remains the top paying province.

The report explores salary offerings, as offered by companies, for top occupations across SA’s most lucrative provinces – Gauteng, the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

For those in the architecture & engineering sector, Gauteng is where approximately 50% of sector-related recruitment takes place. Thus, professionals in this region are the highest earners.

Similarly, four out of 10 jobs posted for medical staff are in Gauteng, the highest recruitment activity for medical staff in SA. This has resulted in a higher salary when compared to the Western Cape.

Overall, finance professionals are among the highest earners in South Africa, due to the large range of jobs within the sector as well as the skillset.

This is especially true for those residing in Gauteng. Year-on-year, salary offerings have increased by more than 20% for financial managers.

Finance professionals in the Western Cape can expect to earn between 23% and 31% less than their Gauteng counterparts for the same job.

Marketing professionals are mainly located in Gauteng; over 60% of recruitment for this sector takes place in this region. Due to the high demand for these skills, salary offerings in Gauteng are higher compared to the Western Cape and Kwazulu-Natal which comes in as a close third.

Construction, ICT, design, media & arts and manufacturing sectors have less significant regional gaps, mostly ranging between five to 10%.

The report indicates that Capetonians appear to earn more than their Gauteng counterparts within the warehousing and logistics industry while professionals in KwaZulu-Natal seem to earn more than Capetonians within the engineering sector.
