ARROWSA, UKZN and DUT are excited to host the International Youth Indra Congress ‘Pathways’ in Durban from the 2nd to the 7th of July 2018. The Congress is billed to be a six-day arts for social change for youth between the ages of 16 and 24 years from countries including South Africa: South Roots, ARROWSA-Bechet and Abasha Bash performing groups, Namibia, India, Palestine, United Kingdom, Canada, and Greece.

The Congress will officially open on the 2nd of July at the Square Space Theatre, Howard College, at UKZN’s Drama and Performance department with a creative exhibition by 2nd and 3rd year DUT Jewellery design students.  The isiShweshwe and isiNdebele inspired Jewellery will be on sale at the exhibition while guests will also enjoy performances by South Roots and Bechet High School, ARROWSA participants. Guest speaker will be David Oddie, founder and a director of the Indra Congress.

The congress week will entail various workshops using drama, music, singing, dance and visual arts towards exploring the congress theme of “Pathways”. It will engage issues of peace and reconciliation. Activities will be facilitated by experts in the arts fields. These include Durban based visual artists Karla Nixon and Dane “Stops” Knudsen and Kathlyn Allan of Author Jewellery, based in the Western Cape. The music and dance workshops will be facilitated by Sue-Livia van Wyk of South Roots, working her expertise of combining music, singing and dance. Ongezwa Mbele, a UKZN doctoral Drama and Performance candidate will share her expertise and lead the drama sessions. Dr Miranda Young-Jahangeer of UKZN will host the arts for social change symposium presentations and workshop on Friday, the 7th of July, and this will contribute to the current theoretical conversation on applied theatre; the arts for social change, peace and reconciliation .

All activities will culminate with a spectacular parade on the beach front promenade on Saturday 7th July from 10.30 – 12.30 from the Snake Park to Joe Cools areas.
